He was appointed a Notary Public for Kerry and contiguous counties in 1981. He recently complemented his experience by taking a post graduate Diploma in Notarial Law and Practice from the Institute of Notarial Studies in 2016.
With over 50 years’ experience in general practice, Michael is extremely knowledgeable in most areas of general practice with a particular emphasis on conveyancing, licencing, wills, charities and trusts, and defence litigation.
Over the years Michael has acted in several high-profile cases, some leading to seminal decisions in licencing and fishery law and has an unparalleled reputation for securing excellent results for his clients. The fact that many clients have remained with us for upwards of 50 years bears testament to the quality of legal advice Michael has provided and which the firm has become renowned for today.
In recent times Michael has stepped back from full time involvement in the practice and retired from the partnership in 2018, entrusting the running of the practice to the continuing partners, his children Lorna and Coman. He is a welcome face in a building where he has practiced law for 50 years. He provides notarial services by appointment and consultant advice to the firm. He enjoys the odd visit to the Courts, where he had many colourful days as Fishery Prosecutor, appearing on behalf of clients in complex legal matters. Downing Courtney & Larkin Solicitors LLP is very fortunate to have the invaluable resource of his many years of varied experience to call upon.
Michael is married to Trinette and in his spare time, enjoys keeping up to date on politics and current affairs, whilst also being an avid GAA fan. Michael is also a long-time member of Muckross House Trustees. He now has the time to enjoy the natural beauty of Killarney and Kerry and the company of his 11 grandchildren.
